So far things have certainly been quiet on the old war front. I think this is certainly to do with the fact that I have no land borders with any of the other civs. I'm the sole Confuciast and I'm dead last in power, so that'd usually be a guarantee of every other civ war deccing me. However, I'm at least 5 turns travel via ship from the nearest other civ, so this is giving me some breathing room. This peace will not last forever, so I am building military units. However, I know I don't need quite as many as usual, since the AI has issues on archipelgo maps (though it's much better than it used to be).
25AD - I continue my peaceful building. I've seen ships (work boats, actually) from Brennus and Genghis pass through my territory. No doubt going for the circumnavigation prize. On that note, I'm actually quite close to getting it myself:
I've also noticed something quite nasty. Earlier on, I noted that I was quite happy that Genghis was a long long way east of me, and not likely to bother me with wars. Well, when I travel west from my lands I actually find that he's my next door neighbour, seperated by a channel of ocean. When he can build ships that can move over ocean, I'm in no doubt that Genghis will be sending over large visiting parties. Well, at least I can't complain about not being warned in advance....
55AD - My scout does the circle and claims the circumnavigation bonus:
This is huge on a map like this. I'm very glad I got this one!
100AD - Literature comes in. Gilgamesh "politely requests" I give him Aesthetics. Go to hell, I tell him.
I whip in a courthouse in the capital to get rid of 3 population
With the huge food surplus in Nidaros, it's very hard to keep the population happy.
115AD - Temple of Artemis built in a far away land. Was thinking of going for that one.
130AD - I make a great deal when I trade Code of Laws for Monarchy to Justinian. Go straight into Hereditary rule. This will finally allow me to solve the crippling happiness issue in Nidaros.
145AD - Kashi Vishwanath build in far off land.
160AD - Stick research up to 80% and I'm still making 1 gold per turn. Wahoo!
Get another Great Merchant. Can lightbulb currency, but no point. I'll store him away, I think.
Found Birka, only my 4th city:
The road did go all the way to Uppsala, but I've had some issues with Barbs in the area. Birka also does a very good job of fogbusting. Barbs were appearing so often from that area, that I was sure there was a barb city down in the area!
175AD - Sid gives me a mission to acquire all sushi resources:
Planned to try and do that anyway :) The rules of the game state that I can't do this by declaring war on anyone, so I have to find the various resources that aren't claimed yet. I already have fish and clams aplenty. I've seen a crabs site that I can aim for (SW of Birka), though not any time soon. I haven't seen any rice that isn't already claimed :( Funny thing though, Sid wants to get out of the thumb of foreign suppliers even though I'm not actually importing any sushi resources! Oh well....
*Interlude. I've actually read up on what a corporation does :) It seems that Sid Sushi is a really good one. Corporation's basically converts gold into something else, in Sid's case - food. You also get a nice culture bonus. From what I see of it, I don't think I'm going to want to spread this to anyone else, as they do get quite a good benefit from it Since the HQ is in my capital, it looks like it'll be best if I put my Wall Street there, to capitalise on the gold per turn I get from seeding it around the place. It might be worthwhile forming another corporation or two later, Mining Inc looking particularly nice. My finances at the time will be the deciding factor, for sure!
220AD - Currency comes in, start on music. Start building the Great Library in my capital.
235AD - I think the stats and my tech lead look alright for now. I guess Justinian must have the highest population, due to his score:
250AD - Found Bjorgvin to get the copper!
Really needed this one, as I've been defending my cities against barbarian invaders (they have Swords now) with nothing more than Archers! Looking around, I don't see any iron in my territory. I'll have to go far afield to get some, or trade for it. But the AI doesn't seem to like trading it away, unless it's for a ridiculous price! If it comes to it, I'd have to pay. But I'd prefer to bypass the iron age and get to gunpowder before going to war.
265AD - Justinian completes the Mahabodi. Don't know what that is. My confuciasm religion has spread into Turfan in Mongolia. It'd be sweet if that caught on!
310AD - Christianity founded in Orleans. It's a triple holy city!!! My Confuciasm spreads to Karakoum in Mongolia. This is looking good for possible relations with Genghis is Confuciasm caught on over there! :)
325AD - Tell Louis to go to hell when he demands COL. However, in 340AD - I do trade it to Louis with Literature when he offers Calender and Monotheism + 70G. Go into Organized religion immediately. I see that Brennus doesn't even have Priesthood. It's a very outdated tech, so I sell it to him for 30G.
385AD - Enter medieval era as Music comes in. I get the free GA
Start Philosophy, be nice to get Taoism too.
In 415AD, Gibbon's great work shows that I'm 4th most wealthy. I'm pulling break even science at 80%.
I've no use for piles of cash sitting around, so as long as I have enough gold to cover emergencies, I don't care if people have more.
Still, I do check who has spare cash and I sell Monotheism to Gilgamesh for 50G.
The very next turn, Genghis comes in with a trademark request - he demands I give him 130G. I decide not to accede to his request....
475AD - I lose my legendary scout to a barbarian archer
He served me well, and got the circumnavigation bonus for me.
I think he was the second land unit I ever built, just after my initial Warrior.
Sid very kindly offers a sushi party in honour of his deeds
505AD - Trade with Gilgamesh, Construction + 10G for Metal Casting. It's a nice deal for me, I think!
535AD - Louis builds Temple of Solomon. Meh, I couldn't build that one anyway
550AD - Get Philosophy, start on Civil Service. I want to be able to spread Irrigation.
Bjorgvin is the holy city of Taoism.
I sell Literature to Justinian for 180G, then sell it to Genghis for 110G. Brennus asks for it nicely, so I give it to him for nothing - hey, sold it around to most everyone else already. Whip 6 pop in my capital for the Great Library:
Well, it's one sure way to fix the unhappiness issue! :) Sure enough, it's enough and I get it in 565AD:
It's actually only my third wonder. I think Louis has been busy grabbing a few of them. I'm quite happy though, they're certainly 3 that I would have picked on this type of a map.
580AD - Use my Taoist missionary to spread it into my capital. It'll help happiness when I go to Free Religion :)
In 670AD, Uppsala follows up with another wonder:
It's a very nice one, given the health problems I have in a lot of cities. I do like wonders where the bonus lasts forever!
685AD - Civil Service comes in and I revolt to Beuracracy. I'm going for Liberalism now, so it's paper - Education - Liberalism for me.
Found Jelling (only my 6th city):
It'll claim one sugar immediately by founding on it, and I'll get another 3 in time when I cut the jungle away. It doesn't look like a great city now, but it'll get better in time! However, looking back, I think it would probably have been better placed one space to the west on the hill. Oh well....
775AD - Great Engineer born in Nidaros. Nice batch of GPs i have built so far. Got a GA and GE now saved away. They're certainly more useful than the millions of Great Prophets I usually get by this time! Though I wouldn't mind one of those, to found the Confuciast holy city building.
790AD - Paper comes in. Onto Education.
805AD - Found Roskilde (my 7th). Expanding well now:
I think it will be a nice city! It's got 2 clams, crabs, pigs and horses (my only source) in range of it, as well as forested hills!!! I'd have went for it earlier, but it was just too far away and all my other cities fulfilled a need at the time.
820AD - Trade for Horseback Riding (now that I have horses!)+ map + 15G with Brennus for Code Of Law, which everyone else already has.
880AD - Justinian finishes the status of Zeus. That's a damned useful wonder if you want to go to war. I plan to avoid war, so it's no biggie for me. Justinian is also quite a long way away from me, so I will hopefully never end up at war with him.
890AD - Send a Sushi executive to Jelling. That'll help it grow in the jungle alright.
I only took a screenie after it went in, but I'm running 70% science without specialists or running wealth.
It was positive at 70% before Sid joined the city, afterwards I just dipped into negative but I'd still be well in the black if I was at 50% science which is the rule.
You can see I'm at -7/turn now after Sid gives me a -12/turn penalty.
So, sorry about missing out on the pre-joining screenshot
900AD - Louis offers to trade world maps. I have a better idea Louis - you give me your map and 80G for mine.
He agrees
I also trade Philosophy to Genghis for Theology + 160G. Next, Philosophy + 65G goes to Brennus for Feudalism.
960AD - Get Angkor Watt in Uppsala. Forget to whip it in though, so there's unhappiness in the city
Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something else to whip in later:
I do a quick check on techs, and I'm well ahead of the game. No-one else even has paper, and I'm 3 turns from Education. I think Liberalism is a cert for me now!
990AD - Education comes in and I enter Renaissance era. I'm way ahead as far as techs go. I start building the Masoleum of Masoleus in my capital. It'll take 26 turns, but I'll whip near the end. Now, I'm going for Liberalism which is 13 turns. I plan to take Nationhood straight after, and build the Taj for a nice longer golden age.
1010AD - Gilgamesh gets the Pyramids. That seems a bit late for them. I could have got it, but chose not to bother. Hereditary rule will do me just fine for now, I can't imagine anything else being better for me now with the amount of food in my empire!
1040AD - I make some sweet trades with Brennus. Get banana for one of my sugar. Then get Cows for Stone. Have to turn down a trade for clams though, I don't sell sushi resources!
1060AD - Louis finishes the Shwedegan Paya. It's useful, but I'm happy enough with organized religion for a while. Herodotus does his great work and shows that I'm currently bottom in the list of who's most powerful! I sell Metal Casting to Brennus for 90G since everyone else already has it. I then sell my world map to Justinian for 135G - wahoo for exploring!!! I follow that up with a trade to him for deer, with me sending him sugar. Then he sends me dye for my spare pigs.
1110AD - Yay - Get Liberalism. I take Nationhood as the free tech -it's the most expensive there. I revolt from Beuracracy into Nationhood immediately. I'll be going to Gunpowder soon, so I'll start drafting a bit. That'll help my unhappiness in cities, and make use of my great growth too. It'll also raise me from being the least powerful civ out there. From now, things will change for me with regards to power.
Nidaros gives me a bloody great spy. What happened - the city grew and the automatically chose to start running a spy specialist. So at a chance of about 2%, I get the most useless of all specialists. He'll be used for a golden age, no doubt about that!!!
Why on earth does the game choose to default to a spy specialist???
1120AD - Most people have Music now, so I sell it to Louis and Brennus for 460G and a map.
Also trade Sugar for Silk to Louis.
He offered me Fish + 5G/turn, That would have been sweet.
But not allowed that, of course
1130AD - Wow, absolutely amazing luck!!! I pop iron at Uppsala!!!
I actually have none, and i'm getting an attack force setup to my SE to attack a barb city with iron.
I'll still go for it, but I'll be attacking with better than axes now
I will have to actually build a road to get it though, why couldn't it have popped one space south
1140AD - OK. Few things happen.
Music comes in. Espionage shows that Louis is going for Divine Right.
I don't really need Islam, even though I could beat him there (it's 11 turns for me, 12 for him).
Wonder could it found in Orleans as well, just like most other religions he has have done?
I go for 10 turn Gunpowder instead.
I see Gilgamesh declares on Justinian too. That'll hurt him if the war lasts, as Justinian has the Statue of Zeus!
I get a quest to build 7 colloseums, sounds like it could be good if I get it:
I've no idea what the reward for this will be, but I know that the reward is usually worth the effort. Unfortunately I don't have the Statue of Zeus and have no chance of getting it, so I'll see what the other options are at the end.
1150AD - I sell Drama around the place. Get a few hundred Gold for a non-monopoly cheap tech. Louis boasts about the power of his Swordsmen. Hehe, he'll get a shock soon when I can shoot at them!
1170AD - Crack the whip in Nidaros. 8 pop go, but the Masoleum comes in :) They'll grow back quickly with all that food:
1190AD - I have 2 Axes to face the barb city of 1 sword and 1 archer. I have reinforcements coming, so I attack before the city can whip in another defender. I take Durocortorum with odds of 63% then 79.7% battles. Yarrr, it's nice when the results actually follow the odds!
It was actually a very tricky choice. Should I give Brennus the city back (must have been his at one stage)??? Hmmmm, sheep (my only source) and iron. Hmmmm, let me think about that one.....
1200AD - Typical demand from Genghis. He wants 680G. Not a chance of this one!
Apostolic Palace is built. It's Judaism as the religion. Nice, I don't have that in any city! Wonder if the palace itself helps spread the religion???
1220AD - I get the following event in Nidaros. Usually I'd be annoyed, but this is great. It stops my city growing too fast and getting unhappy again! I choose to let the 100% of food be destroyed. It'll grow back very quickly!
1230AD - Gunpowder comes in. Onto Constitution.
There's an island to the east of Nidaros, where a barb city has spawned. I send over a force of Axes to take it, but notice when I get there that it's on a hill. So Phrygian isn't going to fall to Axes. I draft a round of Muskets. Most cities can take a -3 happiness. Those that can't get a whipping first! It'll take a few turns to get a force over there.
Funny thing, Phrygian is in the wrong spot. It needs to be one space west.
So I need to sack it and setup my own city
1260AD - I attack and sack Phrygian. Musket kills archer, Musket kills archer, Axe loses to archer, Axe kills archer. I didn't mind attacking, as I had reinforcements arriving next turn even if attack had failed. As I say, 1 square west is the key position - it'll get a clams resource that would otherwise be out of range. It'll also open up the hill square for a mine!
1280AD - Found Tonsberg beside where Phrygian was:
Need to build culture for 15 turns to get the pops required to get fish and clams into my range to claim them!
1285AD - Remember that I have the Masoleum now, so use that great spy to kick off a golden age.
At 80% science, I'm getting 285 beakers pre-golden age. Getting 353 beakers afterwards
1310AD - Constitution comes in. Start machinery going for economics.
1325AD - In comes Machinery - onto Guilds which will take a massive 5 turns! Great Merchant born in Nidaros. Yay. Not sure what to do with him - maybe a trade mission far away??? 3 Great people stored away at the minute - GE, GA, GM
1350AD - Guilds comes in - onto Banking.
Get a nice trade on Guilds for Engineering with Louis. I thought I'd have to sweeten the deal, not him
Trade guilds for Optics plus change to Gilgamesh Finally sell it to Brennus for 310G. My tech lead is nice. I see other civs still need paper. I have Education and Liberalism beyond that!!!
1360AD - My Golden Age ends
Luckily, the Taj isn't far away
1365AD - Banking finishes, start on Economics. I also finish my Coloseum mission. I choose for Coloseums to give an extra +1 happiness:
I see Justinian had banking, but I haven't seen the free GM for Economics yet. I might have a chance of getting it and the free GM!!!
1370AD - Another nice event. I chose the first option, only taking the 403 beakers for free. I need that 134G more than i need the chance of more beakers into Divine Right:
Louis completes the Parthenon. That would actually have been a nice wonder to get. Found Sigtuna in the SW for those pigs :)
In 1375AD - it had to happen eventually. Someone wants to take advantage of my poor preparation in terms of building soldiers. The horns of war, and it's me that they're directed at!
